Humidifier Filters

Many people turn to humidifiers to control the humidity of their home or office. Humidifiers work by sending water into the air, increasing humidity to a more comfortable level. Humidity levels in our room or office should be maintained between 30 and 50 percent for optimum comfort and health. To do this, humidifier unit needs humidifier filters.

There are two main type technologies of humidifiers, they are warm mist and cool mist humidifier. Water is heated and sent into the air, in warm mist humidifiers, but in cool mist humidifiers, water is blown through a wick filter and into the air. The humidifier filter is needed to filter out bacteria and other toxic impurities from the water.

Using Filters

When we operate humidifier units, we will need to change the humidifier filters from time to time to avoid running into problems. There are many different units and many different types of humidifier filters including HEPA filters, wick filters and filter cartridges.

Humidifier filters are designed to trap the moisture from the air and remove particles. When humidifier filters become dirty, it can not longer doing it job as well and we find that our humidifier will not work effectively. Our humidifier may be even start to recycle toxic pollutants back into the air.

We have to change our humidifier filters every 1 to 3 months. The time can vary depending on how dusty our house is. Some humidifier manufactures allow customers to wash the filter before buying a new in order to get a few more weeks out of it.

How to Replace

The humidifier filters are ready for a change whenever there are visible build up of dust and pollutants. If there are nothing visible the humidifier filters still must be changed at least once a year to rid of invisible mold spores or bacteria that could be lurking in the filter.

Before beginning to change our humidifier filters, be sure to unplug the unit from outlet electricity. Then remove the water tank and empty it if necessary. Fill it up with cold water and add a tablespoon of household bleach to disinfect any possible mold or bacteria that might have built up in the sitting water.

Proceed to remove the motor housing. It is the piece that covers the top of the humidifier. Vacuum or wipe away any dust or dirt that might be on the humidifier and humidifier filters. Do not take the unit apart any further than this because that would void the manufacturer warranty.

Lift the humidifier filters out of the humidifier unit. Some models have humidifier filters that can be cleaned and reused. Since most replacement humidifier filters are economical, it is good idea to use new humidifier filters as it is the cleanest way to go. If you do choose to wash and reuse the humidifier filters be sure not to squeeze or wring it dry to avoid tearing the filter.

Putting the humidifier unit back together is straight forward. Everything has to go back the way humidifier unit opened up. The base of the humidifier unit can be cleaned with a cup of white vinegar. Just let it sit for about 20 minutes, then use the bleach and water mix from the water tank to disinfect. Then rinse everything to rid of the cleaning chemicals. Now, our humidifier unit with clean humidifier filters is ready to use.
